A red brick house wall in stretcher bond with algae on the shaded courses

Exterior wall cleaning in Swindon

Exterior wall softwashing in Swindon for brick, stone and painted walls.

Brick and stone look solid, but the mortar between them is not. Pressure washing an older wall takes the pointing out faster than it takes the algae off, and repointing a house costs a great deal more than cleaning it. We clean walls chemically and keep the pressure off the joints.

How we do it

What you're actually paying for.

Pointing survives it

On anything with lime mortar or aged pointing, pressure is the enemy. The mortar is softer than the brick and washes out first. A biocide-led soft wash removes the growth and leaves the joints where they are.

Green north-facing walls

The green film that builds on shaded elevations is algae and it comes back on a cycle. Treating it kills the growth at the root rather than just rinsing the surface colour off, which is why a treated wall stays clean far longer than a washed one.

Painted and rendered walls

Painted masonry can be cleaned without stripping the paint, provided the paint is sound. We test an area first and tell you honestly if the coating is too far gone to survive a clean.

Whole elevations, not patches

We clean to a natural break: a corner, a downpipe, the full elevation. Cleaning half a wall leaves a line that looks worse than the algae did.

On the day

Step by step.

  1. 01

Assess the masonry and the condition of the pointing before choosing a method.

  2. 02

    Protect glazing, frames and planting.

  3. 03

Apply biocide soft wash and let it dwell.

  4. 04

Rinse at controlled pressure, working to a natural break so there is no tide line.

  5. 05

Wash down surrounding surfaces and clear up.

Questions

Wall softwashing, answered.

Will cleaning damage my pointing?

Not the way we do it. Mortar is softer than brick and pressure washing takes it out, which is how people end up needing a house repointed after a clean. We lead with a biocide treatment and keep pressure off the joints.

Can you clean painted walls?

Usually, if the paint is sound. We test a small area first. If the coating is already flaking we will tell you that cleaning will lift it, so you can decide whether to clean or repaint.

Why does the green keep coming back?

Shade and moisture. North-facing walls, and anything close to a hedge, fence or overhanging tree, stay damp for longer and re-colonise faster. A biocide treatment kills the growth rather than rinsing it, which buys considerably more time than a wash.
